Pilot!
Kolkata is full of pilots. At least, if you follow the signs on the public buses, on whose doors the word “Pilot” is painted in bold letters on the driver’s side, while on the opposite side “Emergency Gate” is emblazoned.
None of these detailed lettering is like the other, they are all hand painted and often decorated with floral ornaments or decorative elements. These colourful, individual letterings are a special feature of Kolkata and characterise the cityscape of the City of Joy.
Howrah, Saltlake, Esplanade…
Besides the hand-painted destinations of the bus lines, lettering in English and Bengali welcomes passengers (WelCome), encourages other road users to follow the traffic rules (Obey Traffic Rules), keep their distance (Danger), or generally reminds passers-by how great India is (India is great).
